I Don’t Know What Love Is Yet is a deeply personal exploration of relationships, societal expectations, and the pressure to conform to romantic norms. In today’s world, it feels rare to hear someone admit they haven’t experienced milestones like first kisses or “I love yous.” Growing up surrounded by Disney love stories, I often felt isolated by my own lack of romantic experiences, leading to shame and confusion. In my 20s, I’ve come to realize that it’s okay not to have followed the typical path of romance.
This drawing depicts me alongside a disappearing male figure, symbolizing my absence of a romantic male figure in my life. The collage of Disney couples in the background reflects how those stories shaped my ideals of love, even though they sometimes feel unrealistic. The red cellophane, often used to wrap Valentine’s chocolates, represents the love I long to experience but haven’t yet.
Through this piece, I want to remind others who feel the same: you are not alone, and your worth is not defined by the experiences you haven’t had. Love is not one-size-fits-all, and it’s okay to define it on your own terms.
